Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
After a life fully engaged, Doris Scott Matthews passed away peacefully on December 10th at age 88. All will remember a women with adventurous spirit, devoted to her family and passionate about serving her community. She and her late husband Charles, married 63 years, were active members of the Youngstown, NY, community for over 40 years. She is survived by two sons, James (Joanne) of Pensacola, Florida and Bruce (Carol) of Youngstown, NY and their children, Leah Zahradnik (Ben), Hannah (Jay) and Madeline. Also surviving are her sister Mrs Lorraine Campbell and sister-in-law Mrs Marion Scott along with great grandchildren Ben Zahradnik Jr., Austyn Zahradnik and Mila Zahradnik…..also nieces and nephews. Doris, oldest daughter of George and Dollie (Wright) Scott grew up on the Upper Niagara River along the River Road section in Niagara Falls. Her early life “on the river” forged lasting memories that persisted even through her battle with Alzheimers Disease in her later years. After high school at Niagara Falls High and business school, she and Chuck were married in 1953. During her working years, the family moved between Western New York and Long Island, NY, finally settling in Youngstown in 1975. For many years after that she ran the Payroll Department at Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital. Her love for animals was ever present. She and Chuck enjoyed raising Corgi’s and participating in AKC dog shows across the northeast. Always active in the community, she volunteered at the polls during elections and for many years was a mainstay for the Niagara County Meals on Wheels program. Seeing a need in the local area, she became the village seamstress and pursued her passion for sewing and offering help for others. For many years, she and Chuck sailed ‘Chador’ with the Catalina 22 Sailing Club. Along the way she founded a quilting group that continues to be very active today. To round out a busy life in retirement, parishioners at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown will remember her active service at the church and her long dedication to the church community. Possessed of a truly independent and hardworking spirit, Doris could do most anything she had a mind to. She instilled these values in her family, friends and co-workers. We all cherish our memories and will miss her deeply. Memorial service for Doris will be held Saturday May 8th, 2021 at 11:30 at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown 100 Church St. Youngstown. A note of very special thanks to Doris’ niece, Mrs Peggy Gentzke, and all her dedicated co-workers at Elderwood at Wheatfield. Arrangements entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES LEWISTON.
